Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Tuesday claimed that his nation is open to any kind of concepts and if proof is sent when it come to fugitive preacher Zakir Naik, Malaysia “will not condone terrorism”.

He claimed the concern of fugitive preacher was not elevated by PM Modi in the conference today however he claimed PM Modi did increase the concern in the past.

“It was not raised by the prime minister. He did raise much earlier, many years back. But the issue is, I’m not talking about one person, I’m talking about the sentiment of extremism, of compelling cases and evidence that suggests the atrocities committed by an individual or groups or parties. These are of concern to us. The atrocities of Israeli forces in Gaza, that is real… We are open to any ideas and if evidence is submitted, we will not condone terrorism,” said Ibrahim while addressing the 50th Sapru House Lecture on Tuesday.

He said the need of the hour is to produce a compelling case to support it and added that Malaysia has been working with India on many issues related to terrorism.

“But we have to produce a compelling case to support it. We have been tough. We’ve been working together with India on many of these issues against terrorism. But I don’t think one case should deter us from further collaboration and enhancing our bilateral cooperation…,” said Ibrahim.

Radical Muslim preacher Zakir Naik moved to Malaysia from India in 2016 and reportedly secured permanent residency there. Naik is a wanted man in India and faces charges of spreading hate and money laundering.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs declared Zakir Naik’s Islamic Research Foundation unlawful in 2022. Naik is accused of promoting hate, and disharmony, and his speeches are seen as objectionable as he has been extolling known terrorists promoting conversion and terrorism.
